Grassroots at Redbraes during Edinburgh Festival 2008

On a stormy winter night it’s great to get a blast of summer. The picture shows the fantastic Grassroots Theatre Company when they visited Redbraes community garden in warmer weather. Now they are back for another tour of Scotland with what sounds like perfect timing for the St Andrews night party in Fort Community Wing on Monday 30th November – they are invited to give a workshop which should warm everyone up.

Shock horror, what’s the news?

shockhorror

Well, it looks like good news for the first News Group workshop anyway.  Gavin Crichton says there’s good response for the first current affairs workshop from ACTive Inquiry at Out of the Blue in Dalmeny Street on Saturday 28th Noember 10-12.  Meet in the cafe from 9.45 and bring a recent news story that has annoyed you in some way.  Continue reading “Shock horror, what’s the news?”

Made in Scotland, a better kind of politics?

The day has certainly demystified some of the Parliament’s workings and put a human face on the institution.

Ben Stollery is the latest person to take part in our Opening Doors scheme. Here he describes how his day shadowing Malcolm Chisholm MSP gave him an insight into the workings of the parliamentary committees –  and more confidence to get involved in politics. That’s politics with a small ‘p’…now over to Ben. Continue reading “Made in Scotland, a better kind of politics?”

Time to talk: do faith and politics go together?

Interfaith+Week+2009+programme

“Interfaith dialogue is about building deeper human relationship not about conversion, evangelism or judgement of others beliefs.” Ewan Aitken.

Can you mix faith with politics? The subject is grasped by two men who should know at 6pm on Sunday 22 November in the Annandale Street Mosque during this year’s Interfaith programme. Expect a stimulating discussion – and take the chance to join in afterwards. Continue reading “Time to talk: do faith and politics go together?”

Welcoming news – the cinema club starts again

WELCOMING_POSTER_1

Great news in from the west.  That’s the west of Edinburgh, where the Welcoming centre runs a terrific programme of events bringing together local communities with refugees and asylum seekers – sharing ideas and learning together through art, film, music, discussion and food.   The cinema club starts again next week with an exciting list of films (and new comfy chairs).  But that is not the only good news… Continue reading “Welcoming news – the cinema club starts again”

Don’t let it get you down – come and turn the news into community action

How do we deal with the words and images bombarding us every day?   Leith Open Space is delighted to support ACTive Inquiry in a current affairs workshop with a difference. Here’s your chance to pull the news to pieces as we explore how to become active and influential participants instead of passive consumers of too much information. Make a note of the date: 28 November in the Old Drill Hall. Here’s the very ACTive Gavin Crichton to tell you why.. Continue reading “Join the News Group and start to change the world”

Get out of town

waterfallA walk on the (not so) wild side can take you here…

Her Power Point was not working and she couldn’t lug a heavy display board on the train to Edinburgh so she had no pictures to show.  But as Pammy Johal told the audience, “I can talk,” and she showed that sometimes words are almost as good as actions.  Almost but not quite… Continue reading “Get out of town”

Flashback to summer: what the judges saw

Congratulations to Redbraes! Black (and white) history month

We could call it just history month, but it’s more than that. It’s about forgotten heroes and stories that we never get told at school.

October is Black History Month in Britain and has been since 1987. This year’s celebrations by  Africa Centre Scotland in Edinburgh are a reminder that when it comes to history there is no line between black and white. Continue reading “Black (and white) history month”

And a song to march to

We are Remembering is a rousing song to help you on your way tomorrow. And there are lots more. The radical choir, Protest in Harmony, has compiled a song book to help the Gude Cause march in step through Edinburgh.  If you want to tune up first, Chris Booth says the choir will be pleased to see you at the practice at 10.30 at James Gillespies’ School, Lauderdale St. Edinburgh near Bruntsfield Links where the procession starts.
